On board our low-water tanker Canaletto, Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger met with GEFO Managing Director Sven von Appen and BASF CEO Markus Kamieth to discuss the current challenges facing the logistics sector. The discussion focused on how innovative ship technology, such as that used on the Canaletto, can help overcome periods of low water levels and what is needed to ensure the long-term viability of inland shipping.

GEFO has commissioned the construction of two 7,900-dwt tankers with stainless-steel tanks and ice class 1A. The vessels will be built at the Nantong Xiangyu shipyard in China, with deliveries expected from late 2026. Sustainability is also a key focus of this fleet expansion: the new tankers will consume less fuel, produce lower emissions and be equipped with Flettner rotors to harness wind energy.

GEFO has announced a new investment programme for a total of ten chemical tankers. Alongside efficiency, sustainability will be a particular focus for the new vessels. The 3,850-dwt chemical tankers, fitted with stainless-steel tanks, will be built at the Xiangyu shipyard in Nantong, China. Deliveries will begin in 2026.

The total amount invested comes to €400 million and will result in 26 newbuild vessels and 13 purchases of modern tonnage. According to the company, competitive construction prices could only be achieved in the countries mentioned.
